Dorothy
Carless
As is well known, Dorothy Carless was a most popular English vocalist of the thirties and forties. In addition to her solo work, she gained much of her fame with the British dance bands of the day, singing with them on the bandstands in the dance halls, over the radio, or adding her fine vocals at their recording sessions. She was also a talented pianist and, following her move to the USA broadened her career performing in cabaret. This CD presents the two LP record albums she recorded in New York in the late fifties, the first one, The Carless Torch, accompanied by the Barney Kessel Trio, and the second, Mixed Emotions, on which she provided her own piano accompaniment. There are also two bonus tracks, recorded a few years earlier, soon after her arrival in the US.
The songs performed here are presented in an intimate atmosphere, and listening to them one can well imagine being a lucky member of the audience in some attractive Manhattan night spot, listening and watching as the beautiful Miss Carless did what she did so well. So, we can do the same - sit back and listen to these two dozen treasures. Some of them familiar classics, others less well known. Each of them, though, presented with the innate taste, polish, sensitive phrasing and down-to-earth talent that formed a great part of this talented lady’s trademark.
