BROADWAY RIGHT NOW / MEL TORMÉ & MARGARET WHITING (ROYCD 310)
The time of the ‘Right now’ of the title is 1960. And this sensational album, recorded late that year, took for its theme the best songs from the best musicals that were playing on Broadway at that time. And what an album it is. Four great shows are featured – Wildcat, Do Re Mi, Irma La Douce and Camelot. Twelve tracks in all, comprising solos and duets by the brilliant Mel Tormé and Margaret Whiting. Here are they are at their absolute best, backed by the superbly talented Russell Garcia producing some of the finest of his witty and lush orchestrations. Twelve absolute gems – among them Our Language of Love, Hey Look me Over, If Ever I Would Leave You, Make Someone Happy – a programme ending with the most wonderful Wildcat medley/duet Far Away From Home/ Angelina – a piece that which was written too late to be included in the original cast recording. What a piece it is! This track alone must be worth the price of the album.
This wonderful album is complemented by bonus tracks featuring solos by the two artists of song hits from earlier Broadway shows.
