In the days of the Big Bands there were many bandleaders who fancied themselves as vocalists as well as instrumentalists. But without doubt Vaughn Monroe was the most successful of them all. Although a prize-winning trumpeter, when fame came to him it celebrated his talent as a singer. Affectionately once tagged The Mellow bellow, his rich baritone voice scored a string of hits through the decade of the forties.
This new release from Flare offers a handful of those hits, giving us the chance to hear again Ballerina, Cool Water, Riders in the Sky et al – and what superb tracks they are. In addition, however, the collection also offers a number of fine recordings that are much less well known. And what a great collection we have – from the haunting opening At the Crossroads, to The Phantom Stage Coach and Legend of Tiabi, they are all treasures.
